Lessons and Carols is the high point of the Mixed Chorus’ choir season every year. Raising our voices together in song, we form friendships with students, alumni, faculty, and staff, and many of these special friendships will last a lifetime.
Thanks in part to generous support from St. John’s University Alumni Affairs, the Mixed Chorus grows stronger every year. In 2010 working alongside the Department of Student Affairs they helped inaugurate a yearly tradition of Advent Lessons and Carols in St. Thomas More Church. An Alumni Committee, led by Joseph R Gagliano Jr., brought 125 alumni and friends back to campus on the 100th Anniversary of choral singing at St John’s, and oh, what a day it was! Advent Lessons and Carols has been a University tradition ever since.
On January 2, 2011 Mixed Choristers, with Alumni and Friends, embarked on a tour of Italy, singing for Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica twice and performing concerts in Rome, Florence and Assisi. On the day after Christmas, hearing us in St. Peter’s Square, His Holiness gave us two thumbs up and a big warm smile from the Pope-mobile. It was a day not one of us will ever forget! This tour would not have been possible without generous support from St. John’s University for our students.
We are thrilled to be able to share Lessons and Carols with you virtually this year, and we all hope it will encourage you to help us in any way you can to preserve this wonderful tradition for many years to come.
