About

What is GLOBE?

GLOBE (Global Loan Opportunities for Budding Entrepreneurs) is a student-managed academic program in the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University. We are a dedicated group of students that are passionate about helping those that are not financially capable of helping themselves by providing a dignified route out of poverty through micro-credit. Our mission is to “contribute to the alleviation of poverty within our lifetimes starting here at St. John’s”.

Our Purpose…

This year, GLOBE is focused on our growth, not only as a microfinance organization but also in terms of the growth of our borrowers' experience, both financially and socially. This is especially relevant as we enter Guatemala this year – GLOBE’s seventh country of operation. This couldn’t have come at a better time for our Guatemalan community, who suffered a catastrophic volcanic eruption in 2018, leaving in its wake families in dire need of financial support to come to grips with the loss of lives and homes.

GLOBE is determined to help these people and their communities through more than micro-credit, by also educating our borrowers on financial literacy and health care, both of which help them in successfully running their businesses.

Our Borrowers…

With our expansion into Guatemala, we are now able to service even more people! Our borrowers use these loans to change their lives and the lives of their families. Businesses range from hair salons, to tailoring, and from bakeries to bookstores. The majority of our borrowers are women, many single mothers, who without this opportunity would be struggling to make ends meet.  By giving this “hand up”, rather than a “hand out”, we have seen the growth and empowerment within all our borrowing communities, with some borrowers taking out second and third loans! On a larger scale, the small interest that is attached to these loans are redistributed back into the community. This money is used for education, infrastructure and public necessities that benefit the community as a whole.

How you can help…

830 million people worldwide live on less than $1.90 a day, and some of these people are our borrowers. Your donation helps our borrowers help themselves out of poverty. We strive to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty by giving families the wherewithal to send their children to school with the income from their businesses. Your donation can make this happen. Together we can help make a difference, one loan at a time. Can you help us in our fight against poverty?  Our GLOBE family, managers and borrowers alike, thank you in advance for your generosity.
