About

The global generosity movement that takes place annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, commonly known as “Giving Tuesday,” serves as the kickoff to the holiday season and an opportunity to show our gratitude by giving back to our community. St. John’s University participates in this annual Giving Tuesday event; it has transformed our ability to bring about change for many of our students who might not otherwise have been able to attain a degree.

This year, our theme in this season of giving is centered around student food insecurity. It is unimaginable that students across the country suffer from food insecurity—and yet, that is the case. While not something we hear about, nearly 41 percent of four-year college students report experiencing food insecurity and more than 10 percent have gone an entire day without eating.

For anyone who has ever volunteered in a soup kitchen or food pantry or has been the recipient of either, you know the degree to which you are humbled by the experience, and you realize the courage it takes to ask for help. Addressing the issue of food insecurity with our students and ensuring that they stay healthy and focused on their studies is of paramount importance. Anxiety over where their next meal is coming from should not ever be an issue.

Please join us as we work to address this issue and make a gift today.
